• Why it is on our radar 📻️ : There’s a lot of hype around Pika Labs, and a few weeks ago, Pika opened its platform to the public, making this AI more accessible to everyone.

• How to use: Pika Labs is very easy to get started. You just need to either upload an image you want to animate or input a prompt. There are further customizations such as aspect ratio, frames per seconds that you can decide.

Why we love Pika Labs ❤️:

• User-Friendly: You can get started with the very minimum effort. The platform is super easy and intuitive to use.

• Versatile output: Pika allows generous, creative freedom by letting you create videos with prompts and options to customize your videos from basic stuff like size and resolution to the AI’s behavior, such as seeds, negative prompts, and motion behaviors.

• Collaborative community: Pika Labs does a good job at not only providing

• Quality: HD resolution. So, as an example, a 16:9 video would be 1280 x 720 pixels. If you upscale, the resolution is doubled.

• (Last but not least): completely free to use for the basic plan, which I think is plenty enough for a hobbyist. If you’re interested in premium features. Check out the pricing plan for the premium plan.

Why we think you might not like Pika Labs 🫢 

• The most significant limitation of Pika Labs is that its video creation feature is capped at 3 seconds per clip for the free plan. While this may suffice for quick, impactful messages, it might not cater to those looking to create longer-form content. Even with the premium plan, you can only extend this to 15 seconds at most, which makes it not ideal for those looking for a longer form of content. Unfortunately, because of this limitation, Pika doesn’t live up to the hype of “This AI Tool lets you create anime for free!” that I saw in mainstream media. However, it’s still an extremely useful and fun tool.

• Slow processing time: I found that even with lighting generation, it still takes a good few minutes before the result is available. If you’re a patient person, this won’t be an issue for you though.

• Variable Output Quality: AI is non-deterministic by default, and sometimes I get really good results and vice versa with what I think is similar prompts.

• Limited commercial use: If you have a Pro subscription, whatever you create using Pika can be used commercially or non-commercially. Otherwise, your video can only be for personal entertainment with a watermark. Depending on how you intend to use Pika, this can be a considerable limitation.

• Learning Curve: You can get any results with Pika Labs, but to get good results, you definitely need prompt engineering and some skills. Here’s an example prompt to generate the below video. It’s not easy to develop this prompt by yourself if you’re like me and have medium writing skills.

Author’s verdict

Given that Pika Labs is completely free, it’s worth it for any AI enthusiasts to give the tool a try. At its current state, Pika is most suitable for hobbyists, so if you’re thinking that this AI tool can replace animation artists and the like, unfortunately, you will be disappointed. However, you cannot undermine the technology and innovation behind this tool. Of course, it’s not as good as a human, but it’s definitely blowing my mind on what this tool can do.
